Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and bigger refueling tanks should be stored in a different complex or building so as to be more secure. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure which could only be accessed by authorized employees. It is very essential for the safety of the operator, and everybody they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly complied with.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This task can use retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also important to have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. In addition, anyone who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also must be trained to effectively and safely utilize the fire extinguisher. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a lift truck must be properly trained. This training includes a classroom portion in addition to hands-on training. As soon as the training sessions have been completed, the person must be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also covers the correct way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving and site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
There should be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center located within the facility where the forklift is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals that are used on site. This will also cover the propane that is utilized to refuel the unit, along with the acid in the forklift battery.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all workers at all times. Like for example, if an exposure incident occurs, the person has to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to should be given without any delay. Generally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is required, as a general rule; have a medical doctor examine the injury if you fear it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
