Forklift Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to run electric forklifts should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures must be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is really important to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is essential for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be located close to the charging place. The path to the post should not be blocked and an injured worker should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Do not permit items like for instance lighters or matches to be utilized when an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging method could cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
